Toyota Avalon RKE Keyfob Programming

Programming the RKE Keyfob on Toyota Avalon models manufactured in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 can be accomplished quickly and easily by following these steps.

Toyota Avalon 1995-1997 RKE Keyfob Programming

  1. Locate Bulb Failure Warning Module

    LOCATE Bulb Failure Warning Module in trunk near Driver’s Side hinge and DISCONNECT multi-plug on the module.

  2. Enter Programming Mode

    JUMP Bulb Failure Warning Module harness multi-plug terminals 2 and 10 using a paperclip or similar conductive wire. System will cycle door locks LOCK/UNLOCK and activate trunk locks to signal successful entry into Programming Mode.

  3. Program Remote

    PRESS ANY button on the first remote to be programmed. System will cycle door locks LOCK/UNLOCK and activate trunk locks to signal successful programming of the remote.

  4. Program Additional Remote

    REPEAT Step 3 for an additional remote to be programmed.

  5. EXIT Programming Mode

    REMOVE jumper wire from multi-plug and RE-CONNECT multi-plug as it was originally to EXIT Programming Mode and finalize programming.

  6. Test Remotes

    TEST all remotes. Programming is complete.

Programming Notes:

  • Verify the following prior to following these instructions:
    • Your vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, and
    • You have a key fob remote that is compatible with your vehicle.
  • Obtain ALL remote transmitters for this vehicle.

Toyota Avalon  1998-2008 RKE Keyfob Programming

  1. Prepare Vehicle

    With the key OUT of the Ignition, OPEN and UNLOCK the Driver’s door.

  2. Enter Programming Mode – Step 1

    INSERT key into Ignition (Do NOT turn it) and REMOVE key.

  3. Enter Programming Mode – Step 2

    PERFORM the following steps WITHIN 40 seconds:

    a. Using the power lock switch on the driver’s door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second (1 Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).

    b. CLOSE then OPEN Driver’s door.

  4. Enter Programming Mode – Step 3

    PERFORM the following steps WITHIN 40 seconds:

    a. Using the power lock switch on the driver’s door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second (1 Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).

    b. INSERT key into Ignition.

    c. TURN ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
    – Do this ONCE to retain existing remotes programmed.
    – Do this TWICE to ERASE all existing remotes programmed and ADD NEW remote.
    – Do this THREE times to CHECK how many remotes are programmed to the vehicle.
    – Do this FIVE times to ERASE all existing remotes programmed.

    d. REMOVE key from Ignition.

  5. Enter Programming Mode – Step 4

    WITHIN 3 seconds the Power Door Locks should cycle LOCK/UNLOCK to signal successful entry into Programming Mode.

  6. Program Remote

    PERFORM the following steps WITHIN 40 seconds:

    a. PRESS the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.

    b. PRESS and HOLD the LOCK button for 2 seconds. The Door Locks will cycle LOCK/UNLOCK to indicate successful programming of the remote.

  7. Program Additional Remotes

    REPEAT Steps 6a and 6b for any additional remotes to be programmed.

  8. EXIT Programming Mode

    CLOSE Driver’s Door to EXIT Programming Mode.

  9. Test Remotes

    TEST all remotes. Programming is complete.

Programming Notes:

  • Verify the following prior to following these instructions:
    • Your vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, and
    • You have a key fob remote that is compatible with your vehicle.
  • Obtain ALL remote transmitters for this vehicle.
  • If you have a remote head key with a transponder chip, this procedure will ONLY program the remote portion. You’ll need a Professional Auto Locksmith to cut and program the transponder key that will start the vehicle.
  • If you have a remote head key without a transponder chip, this procedure WILL work for your vehicle.
  • This procedure DOES NOT work for smart proximity remote key fobs.

Toyota Avalon  2009-2022 RKE Keyfob Programming

An OBD 2 scan tool with keyfob/RKE programming capabilities is required to accurately program the RKE key fob on a Toyota AVALON from model years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022. This feature is available on a variety of scan instruments, including the Launch X431 Pro Series.
