How to Perform a Throttle Relearn on Your Geely Vehicle
If you own a Geely Coolray, Azkarra, Okavango, or Emgrand, you may need to perform a throttle relearn procedure after disconnecting the battery or cleaning the electronic throttle body. A throttle relearn allows the engine control module (ECM) to reestablish the baseline idle and throttle settings.
What is a Throttle Relearn?
In drive-by-wire vehicles like modern Geelys, there is no physical cable connecting the accelerator pedal to the throttle body. Instead, the ECM controls the throttle electronically based on input from the accelerator pedal position sensor (APPS).
The ECM learns the minimum and maximum stops of the throttle valve and stores this data. If power is disconnected or the throttle body is cleaned, this learned data is lost. The throttle blade position may change slightly, causing incorrect learning. As a result, the engine may idle roughly or stall until a throttle relearn procedure is performed.
Geely Models Requiring a Throttle Relearn
Based on information from Geely Philippines, a throttle relearn procedure likely applies to these current Geely models which use an electronic throttle body:
- Geely Coolray (2020+)
- Geely Azkarra (2021+)
- Geely Okavango (2021+)
- Geely Emgrand (2022+)
How to Perform a Geely Throttle Relearn
Follow these steps to relearn the throttle settings on your compatible Geely vehicle:
- Ensure the accelerator pedal is fully released.
- Turn the ignition on (key on, engine off) for at least 2 seconds.
- Turn the ignition off for at least 10 seconds.
- Start the engine and let it idle in park for at least 3 minutes until the idle speed stabilizes. Do not press the accelerator.
- Turn off the engine and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Restart the engine and confirm the idle is smooth and stable.
If the idle is still rough or unstable after this procedure, repeat the steps again. In rare cases, a diagnostic scan tool may be required to reset the throttle learn settings.
