Toyota Prius RKE Keyfob Programming

The quick and easy to follow instructions on how to program the RKE Keyfob on the Toyota Prius from the years 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Toyota Prius 2001-2004  RKE Keyfob Programming

  1. Prepare Vehicle

    With the key OUT of the Ignition, OPEN and UNLOCK the Driver’s door.

  2. Enter Programming Mode – Step 1

    Perform the following steps within 5 seconds:

    a. INSERT key into Ignition (Do NOT turn) and PULL the key out.

    b. INSERT key into Ignition (Do NOT turn) and PULL the key out.

  3. Enter Programming Mode – Step 2

    PERFORM the following steps WITHIN 40 seconds:

    a. CLOSE then OPEN Driver’s door.

    b. CLOSE then OPEN Driver’s door.

    c. INSERT key into Ignition (Do NOT turn) and PULL the key out.

  4. Enter Programming Mode – Step 3

    PERFORM the following steps WITHIN 40 seconds:

    a. CLOSE then OPEN Driver’s door.

    b. CLOSE then OPEN Driver’s door.

    c. INSERT the key into the Ignition and LEAVE it in the Ignition.

    d. CLOSE the Driver’s door.

  5. Enter Programming Mode – Step 4

    TURN the Ignition to ON position (Do NOT crank engine) then back OFF.
    – Do this ONCE to retain existing remotes programmed and ADD NEW remote..
    – Do this TWICE to ERASE all existing remotes programmed and ADD NEW remote.
    – Do this THREE times to CHECK how many remotes are programmed to the vehicle.
    – Do this FIVE times to ERASE all existing remotes programmed.

  6. Enter Programming Mode – Step 6

    REMOVE key from Ignition. The power door locks will respond by cycling the locks from LOCK/UNLOCK to signal successful entry into Programming Mode.

  7. Program Remote

    Perform the following steps within 40 seconds:

    a. PRESS and HOLD the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 2 seconds. RELEASE.

    b. PRESS and HOLD the LOCK button and hold for 2 seconds. RELEASE.

    The vehicle will respond by cycling the locks from LOCK to UNLOCK to indicate successful programming of the remote.

  8. Program Additional Remotes

    REPEAT Step 7 for any additional remotes to be programmed, including working ones.

  9. EXIT Programming Mode

    OPEN Driver’s Door to EXIT Programming Mode.

  10. Test Remotes

    TEST all remotes. Programming is complete.

Programming Notes:

  • Verify the following prior to following these instructions:
    • Your vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, and
    • You have a key fob remote that is compatible with your vehicle.
  • Obtain ALL remote transmitters for this vehicle.
  • If you have a remote head key with a transponder chip, this procedure will ONLY program the remote portion. You’ll need a Professional Auto Locksmith to cut and program the transponder key that will start the vehicle.
  • If you have a remote head key without a transponder chip, this procedure WILL work for your vehicle.
  • This procedure DOES NOT work for smart proximity remote key fobs.

OTHER  INSTRUCTION TO MAKE IT EASY TO UNDERSTAND.

  • Driver’s door open, remote transmitter removed from ignition switch slot
  • Within 5 seconds: Insert and remove the remote transmitter from the ignition switch slot twice
  • Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver’s door twice
  • Insert and remove the remote transmitter from the ignition switch slot. Close and open driver’s door twice
  • Insert the remote transmitter into the ignition switch slot and close the driver’s door
  • Within 40 seconds
  • Note: DO NOT depress brake pedal whilst carrying out the following operation. Press POWER button to switch ignition ON (amber LED illuminated) and OFF once to program a remote transmitter code whilst retaining the original codes or twice to program a re mote transmitter code whilst erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered or five times to erase all registered codes
  • remove remote transmitter from ignition switch slot:
  • Within 5 seconds: System should now lock and unlock vehicle once, twice or five times depending which mode has been selected. One to four times, slow, to indicate number of remote transmitters registered
  • Within 40 seconds: Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds
  • Within 3 seconds: Press LOCK button
  • System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed
  • Within 40 seconds: Repeat button procedure to program remaining remote transmitter
  • NOTE: To exit programming mode: Open driver’s door. NOTE A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed. NOTE: Remote transmitters can also be programmed using diagnostic equipment

Toyota Prius 2004-2022  RKE Keyfob Programming

To successfully program the RKE key fob on a Toyota Prius built in any of the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022, you will need an OBD 2 scan tool with the keyfob programming feature.
